Best-selling author Sidney Sheldon passed away aged 89. He had an emotional bond to Bulgaria thanks to his second wife Alexandra Kostoff, who is of Bulgarian origin. Sheldon visited the country in July 2005 to the delight of his numerous committed readers here.

Sheldon won awards in three careers - Broadway theater, movies and television - then at age 50 turned to writing best-selling novels about stalwart women who triumph in a hostile world of ruthless men.

Sheldon died Tuesday afternoon of complications from pneumonia at Eisenhower Medical Center, hic publicist Warren Cowan said. His wife, Alexandra, and his daughter, author Mary Sheldon, were by his side.

Sheldon's books, with titles such as "Rage of Angels," "The Other Side of Midnight," "Master of the Game" and "If Tomorrow Comes," provided his greatest fame. They were cleverly plotted, with a high degree of suspense and sensuality and a device to keep the reader turning pages.

Sheldon was born on February 17, 1917.

Sheldon was married for more than 30 years to Jorja Curtright Sheldon. She died in 1985. He married Alexandra Kostoff, who is of Bulgarian origin, in 1989.
