Bulgaria in the Grips of Flu

Twelve out of 26 district areas in Bulgaria were pronounced in "flu holidays" after the number of patients with the disease steadily crept up.

The emergency holidays in all schools in these regions will be in place until Friday, January 26, the Education Ministry announced.

The influenza wave, caused by a Wisconsin strain, is believed to have come from Macedonia and Northern Greece, epidemiologists said.

For a week alone the number of patients has been up from 9,140 to 19,356. every 500 per 10,000 people are ill now, doctors alarmed.
