HRISTO BISSEROV - FORMER UDF GENERAL SECRETARY FOR STANDART DAILY:

Politics | June 19, 2001, Tuesday // 00:00

The interview:
- Mr Bisserov, what did the vote of the people show?
- The vote was a penalty one.
- Concerning whom - Ivan Kostov in person, the UDF, the authorities?
- Concerning the way the power was used.
- How do you explain the fact that for the first time for 10 years the UDF lost the UDF fortresses of Sofia and Plovdiv?
- This is inseparable from the penalty vote. The UDF approach to the recent election was strategically wrong.
- What do you mean?
- As early as the end of 1999 and the beginning of 2000 the results of the local elections had to be a clear indication as to how they should approach things at the end of their mandate. However, the mistakes were made and the recent result was inevitable. The result was very bad. I kept hoping that the UDF would not get into such a grave situation.
- Actually, concerning UDF, its result is worse than that in the 1994 general election when the then UDF coalition won 24% of the votes.
- It is difficult to make subtly differentiated assessments. However, generally speaking, things are like this.
- Was the recent a penalty vote for Ivan Kostov's political line or for the economic policy?
- I can't give a definite answer to this question. In my view, it is connected with the political line, rather. Although experts and the more experienced concerning the economy may say the opposite. However, I'm strongly impressed by precisely this political aspect.
- Henceforth, what should the UDF do to bid good bye to the line which was rejected by people?
- The UDF must renounce everything people rejected.
- Has the UDF party got the potential and strength to do it?
- Yes. It has got the potential. But it is a matter of proving. It's difficult. But it's not impossible.
- At the end of the election campaign Ivan Kostov admitted in Haskovo of a second power center within UDF.
- My God, sometimes Ivan Kostov doesn't understand the UDF although he is chairman of UDF.
