Bulgaria's Roma population launched Friday celebrations of the New Year marked January 14 after their ancient traditions.

Celebrated under the old-time Gregorian calendar, Roma's New Year is also known as Vassilitsa or Bango Vassilii (the Lame Bango). Bango Vassilii is celebrated as the patron of Roma people, and to them the major holiday can be compared only to St. George's Day.

According to Roma legends, Bango Vassillii had rebuilt the bridge for Roma to go ahead after the devil ruined it.

About 800,000 Roma people living in Bulgaria mark these festive days.

Preparations for the holiday could start a week earlier. On St. Basil's Day, a festive family dinner with a deep symbolic meaning brings relatives together. The front door should be closed when the dinner starts, and until midnight none of the family is allowed to go out and no stranger is allowed to enter the home.

For some Roma groups the celebrations continue for three days.

January 14 is celebrated as New Year also by Serbians, Macedonians and Russians, whose Churches still follow the Gregorian calendar.
