Sofia Municipality and Defence Ministry organised celebrations to mark the 159-th anniversary since the birth of Bulgarian poet and revolutionary Hristo Botev.

A solemn ceremony took place in front of Botev's monument in the Borisova garden in Sofia.

Botev was born exactly 159 years ago in Kalofer, to die aged 28 in a desperate freedom attempt.

The talented young man died as the leader of some 200 rebels, whom he had led into Bulgarian territory to fight for its liberation from Ottoman rule.

Although Botev was also a talented publicist, he is best known for his ardent poetry, mainly inspired by the rebellion movement against the Ottomans.
