The new director general of the World Health Organisation Margaret Chan has officially taken up her position.

Chan is the first Chinese to head a United Nations body.

The 59-year old bird flu expert and former Hong Kong health chief was appointed to the post two months ago following the unexpected death of her South Korean predecessor, Lee Jong-Wook.

Chan said she will outline her vision for the WHO at the World Health Assembly in May but said no major restructuring is in store.
