Bulgaria has made considerable progress in the physical protection of its nuclear facilities, the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which ended on March 1, concluded. The recommendations of the 1996 mission have been fulfilled, while the cooperation between the Safety Department of Kozloduy nuclear plant and the Interior Ministry services is very good. The IAEA experts inspected the state of the physical protection of the Kozlodoui N-plant and the IRT-2000 research reactor in Sofia. The mission started on February 18 and its purpose was to check the implementation of the recommendations made by the previous IAEA mission in 1996. The mission is the first after the terrorist acts in the US of September 11 and is considered to be a pilot one in respect to measures for protection against sabotage and terrorist acts. The report of the mission will be presented to the Committee for the Use of Atomic Energy for Peaceful Purposes by the end of March 2002.
