Mercury in Bulgaria almost Sets World Record

Only about a degree prevented Bulgaria from setting a world temperature record on the first day of its EU membership.

The day was unusually sunny, warm and calm for the winter season in northern Bulgaria.

Thermometers in Pleven hit almost 14 degrees Celsius.

The absolute maximum reached on this day for a 100-year period was 15.4 degrees Celsius and was registered in 1971, local meteorologists said.
