Russia's Abramovich Quits as Governor

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who is also an owner of the English soccer club Chelsea, submitted his resignation as a regional governor, Itar Tass reported.

Putin is yet to make up his mind on the request.

Abramovich, 40, was elected governor of the Chukotka Autonomous Area on December 24, 2000, with 90% of votes. He was confirmed for a second term in October 2005.

In March 2006 the oligarch was listed by Forbes magazine as the richest Russian, the second richest person living in the United Kingdom, and the 11th richest person in the world, with estimated wealth of USD 19.5 B.
