Bulgaria's Ex-President Grabs Peace Prize

Former Bulgarian president Zhelyu Zhelev was awarded the Peace in the Balkans prize of the Turkish foundation of the same name.

Dr. Zhelev was the first democratically elected head of state after 1989. Currently he is President of the Balkan Political Club, which was established in 2001. Dr. Zhelev said he accepts the award as a prize for the Club.

The prize has been awarded for a second time under the initiative of journalists from Southeastern Europe. The ceremony started with the performance of the Bulgarian and Turkish national anthems.

The first winner of the award was Bulgaria's former Foreign Minister Solomon Passy.
