Bulgarians have always known that the country's got good actors. It took a young first-timer, however, for the world to notice it as well. Stanislav Ianevski, one of the stars in the latest Harry Potter movie, managed to grab the hearts of thousands, finally putting Bulgaria's name on the map. Ianevski talked to Petya Sabinova about his ambitions, life and future projects.

In his first movie appearance ever, Ianevski gives face to one of the legends in Potter's world of magic - star quidditch player Viktor Krum. His character is rough around the edges, a bit brutish, and not exactly known for his way with words, but he is a hell of an athlete and women line up to wink at him. Add to this the fact that next to skinny Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry Potter, Ianevski's bulging muscles ore than a pleasant surprise, and you have the recipe for international stardom.

Although he doesn't really shine with IQ in the movie, in the flesh Ianevski strikes as a man who, at the age of 21, already knows what he wants in life and is working his way towards it in a calm and self-assured manner. He is ready to open up just so, going about his emotions on set and what it feels like to be in a movie, but when it comes to his personal life, his lips are tight. "I don't think that it's important to expose my personal life. We are all people and have the right to a private life," he says. "If everyone knows everything about you, you become like an empty shell, and I prefer to be a full shell."

As long as shells are concerned, he certainly seems to keep enough inside. Determined that he is not to let fame mess with his life, he still goes out with friends, practices his favorite snowboarding, trains to shape his muscles and lives with his family. He admits that bad media sometimes unnerves his closest ones, but claims that they are getting used to it. When it comes to girlfriends one has to thread lightly, for such questions are frowned upon. Does he at least believe in love as the biggest magic? "Yes, but to my regret I am still waiting to experience it."

Landing a sure-to-make-you-famous role like that of Viktor Krum for your debut is more than fortunate, especially with the Harry Potter mania sweeping the planet. Luck is not all, though, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire director Mike Newell calls Ianevski a natural. "You don't get anywhere as an actor unless you can shut out absolutely everything except the character, your belief in the character, and your belief in exactly the moment that you're playing right now," Newell explains. "He's never acted before, and that huge, huge thing without which no actor is any good, he can do just like that."

In the meantime his fans still appreciate mainly the fact that he is an eye-candy and a very down-to-Earth guy. His appearance often sparks hysterical yells, but as he admits that mostly happens abroad. "Bulgarian fans appreciate your own space. They are not like the ones that jump in and disturb you, they are sort of shy," Ianevski says, explaining why going out in Bulgaria is easier.

Whether it is due to the favorable comments by a director who has worked with actors the rank of Al Pacino and Julia Roberts, or the fans' adoration Ianevski seems sure of his future in movies and speaks with ease and hope on the matter.

At first his confidence is a bit overwhelming. Sadly, history has known many an actor, whose star has faded after the big bang, and hearing this man discarding acting classes and speaking of the natural ways, makes one wonder of his fate.

At present the actor is working on a new project, the sequel to the Hostel movie, in which he plays the role of Miroslav, as his name would suggest another Balkan character. Vera Jordanova, a Finland-born actress of Bulgarian descent also plays alongside him in the blood-chilling horror.

Ianevski claims he is ready for serious drama on screen. Whether this is true, only future is to tell, as his appearance in Harry Potter barely included a couple of lines, that he had to speak in a rotten accent, and left no serious impression of his dramatic skills. That doesn't stop him from dreaming of one day playing alongside Jack Nicholson or Angelina Jolie.

But now Bulgaria's hopeful has to focus on one career-deciding move - breaking through the one-hit-wonder barrier.
