UNEMPLOYMENT IN JANUARY 2002 VERY SLIGHTLY DECREASED

January 2002 unemployment stood at 17.99%, down by 0.55% from January 2001.

The registered unemployed totalled 687,805, the Employment Agency announced.

Sofia had the lowest unemployment rate, 4.89%, and the northeastern Turgovishte region had the highest rate, 32.28%.

In January 2002 jobless women totalled 348,717 and unemployed young persons 190,998. The Agency reported that 21,026 persons had been laid off from various economic branches and entitled to unemployment benefits.

Job opportunities increased over the month. Posted job vacancies totalled 16,063, up 15.2% from December 2001.

Part of the available jobs, 9,084, remained vacant, up by nearly 2,000 from December 2001.

A total of 8,811 jobless persons started work; 68.5% of them were recruited through job centres.

Thirty-one unemployed persons competed for one job in average, the Agency reported.
