Terry Jenkins, Head of the IPPAS Follow-Up Mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency said that the mission team was very impressed with the volume of the work completed in the past five years in Bulgaria’s Kozloduy N-plant. The mission leader pointed that all recommendations made by the previous mission have been carried out and only one of them needs to be further specified. The follow-up mission conducted checks of the system of physical protection of the nuclear material and nuclear facilities, as well as the measures recommended after the IPPAS mission in 1996. The experts of the follow-up mission have concluded that the Kozloduy N-plant demonstrates commitment to the issues of physical protection, thanks to which the N-plant has made considerable progress in this field. The preliminary report of the mission identified a number of good practices to be recommended for application to other nuclear power stations. Jenkins said that Kozloduy’s emergency plan is one of the best he has seen. Another good point is the fine coordination in the plant’s Safety Department with the National Border Police and the National Security Service. The mission team will prepare a preliminary report, which will be presented to the Committee for Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy next week.
