Asen Asenov was appointed acting Director of Customs Agency, Finance Minister Milen Velchev announced February 21. He will perform his duties for three months until a permanent Director is appointed by a competition. Minister Velchev did not rule out the possibility Asen Asenov to be one of the participants, but declined to name the other candidates. His candidature was rivaled by another four very serious applicants, Minister Velchev said. He has been chosen because of his long-term experience in the Customs and his professionalism. Assenov holds a MA in International Relations from the Moscow-based State Institute of International Relations. He started out as a customs inspector at Kalotina checkpoint on the Bulgarian-Serbian border. His most recent position was head of the Tariff Treatments and Procedures Division. He expressed the hope that no problems will hinder his work with the consultants from Crown Argents. In his capacity of Director he has had two meetings with their representatives but said he is not well acquainted with the contract. The new appointment has been discussed with Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg, he added. Former Customs Agency Director Emil Dimitrov submitted his resignation February 20.
