QADDAFI: I HOPE THAT THE BULGARIAN MEDICS ARE INNOCENT

“I hope that the Bulgarian medics are innocent,” Libya’s leader Muammar Qaddafi told his son Seif al-Islam during a conversation about the Bulgarian medics, charged with intentionally infecting Libyan children with HIV. This was announced by Seif al-Islam in an interview for Bulgaria’s private television bTV and Bulgaria’s daily “Sega.” The interview is to be broadcast on February 21, bTV announced. The chairman of the “Qaddafi” foundation Seif al-Islam said that special committee investigates whether pressure has been exercised on the medics in prison and in light of this according to him the whole trial should be re-considered, bTV reported. On February 17, the People's Court of Libya downgraded the trial of six Bulgarian medics charged with infecting hundreds of Libyan children with AIDS, saying their case did not warrant a state security hearing. "After going through the evidence, the court has found that this case has nothing to do with state security or acts of sabotage and there is no tangible evidence of such crimes," the presiding judge, Ibrahim Abu Shinaf, said. "Therefore we decided to transfer the case to the prosecutor's office," he added. The case will be taken back to the Chief Prosecutor and from now hearing will take place in an ordinary criminal court where charges carry lighter sentences, observers commented.“I think that the decision of the People's Court of Libya is a very positive step, “ Foreign Minister Passy told novinite.com after the decision of the court was announced. He emphasized that foundation “Qaddafi,” led by Seif al-Islam had special role for the success.
