Free Checks Mark Day of Osteoporosis Fight in Bulgaria

Bulgaria marked Friday the world day for fighting osteoporosis with a series of free check-ups and campaigns to inform patients of the risks.

The country's government set up a five-year plan for fighting osteoporosis in the summer, aimed at creating specialized units in the hospitals. Over BGN 1.6 M will go to that effect from the budget, with BGN 5.4 M more coming from other sources.

The disease that causes bones to become fragile and eventually start breaking, with women four times likelier to get affected than men. A recent study in the US claimed that women, who often consume Coca Cola are at a greater risk of suffering osteoporosis than those who don't.
