As Sting took a break from pop and released songs by 16-century composer John Dowland, Bulgarian fans heard a warning the new project may leave them surprised, but highly delighted.

In an interview for the Bulgarian state-run TV channel, Sting said he wants people to share and enjoy the adventurous journey he has set on with his new album "Songs From the Labyrinth".

"I don't know where the labyrith leads to, but we are always searching for the centre, " he said.

The ever-gold music legend, who visited Bulgaria for the second time in June this year, considers the album to be particularly timely.

"At times of war, pollution and corruption, art shows us the real issues, the beautiful sadness of existence," he said.

In his words Dowland's songs describe adroitly the depths of sadness and the heights of joy, matching perfectly his own character.

"Songs From the Labyrinth" is an album of 16th-century music performed entirely on the lute. It is comprised of songs by composer John Dowland, a noted lutenist of the English Renaissance and composer of melancholy classics, along with one track written by Robert Johnson (the Englishman, not the American blues legend).

The singer decided to record an album of Dowland's songs after receiving a lute as a gift from Dominic Miller, the Argentinian classical guitarist. The project was born after he met Edin Karamazov, a Bosnian lute player.
