PRINTED PRESS – FAVOURITE IN BULGARIANS’ FREE TIME

Most Bulgarians' cultural pursuits in their leisure time are limited to reading newspapers and magazines, a survey conducted in January by Alpha Research polling agency among 1,100 people shows. A total of 90% of Bulgarians are readers of the printed press - 72% of respondents said they read a newspaper or a magazine at least once a week; 13% said they read such publications at least once every month and 5% do that only several times a year.

Books are ranked third among the preferred options spending free time. One fourth of Bulgarians read books once every week, 15% read books at least once every month, 13% do that several times throughout the year and 38% do not read books. The poll found that the number of domestic Internet users has doubled in the past 18 months from 7.8 to 14% of the population. 17% of respondents said they frequent art exhibitions; 9% go to opera and ballet shows, 17% visit classical music concerts and 14% go to rock concerts. According to the poll cinema has become more popular than theatre, with 3% of the Bulgarians going to the movie every week.
