ECONOMIST INTELLIGENCE UNIT: BULGARIA WON’T BE INVITED TO NATO NOW
Politics | February 17, 2002, Sunday // 00:00
“Bulgaria won’t be able to fulfil the requirements for NATO membership and won’t be invited in NATO at the meeting in Prague in November, “ is the forecast of the Economist Intelligence Unit magazine. The magazine claims that Bulgaria will not be able to progress enough in order to join the European Union with the first wave of candidates in 2005. The higher prices and the strict fiscal policies can lead to erosion in the governing coalition, the analysis reads. In an interview for Bulgaria's private television bTV, Defense Minister Svinarov explained that the analysis is based on conclusions of the writers themselves since no decisions have been taken yet. According to him, the decision whether Bulgaria will get a NATO invitation depends on the progress that Bulgaria will make in the military reform in the coming months. In this respect, Svinarov explained, it is impossible to make conclusions like that of the Economist Intelligence Unit at this stage.
