Dozens of members of the security forces are reported to have been killed in two simultaneous attacks by Maoist guerrillas in the remote west of Nepal. No official count of the dead has been confirmed but policemen, soldiers and local officials are said to be among the dead and injured in incidents in the district of Achham, several hundred kilometres west of the capital, Kathmandu. The attacks come as Nepal's political leaders prepare for a crucial vote in parliament on extending a state of emergency declared last November to fight the Maoists.
