Anousheh Ansari took from the Russian cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, accompanied by a US-Russian crew on the Soyuz TMA-9 capsule.

On her 10-day mission, she will spend two days orbiting earth and eight days at the International Space Station. She will perform a series of experiments, including a live demonstration of the technology of her new venture Prodea Systems.

Ansari reportedly paid USD 20 M to take a trip and visit the international space station.

She is the fourth private explorer to visit space, and the first astronaut of Iranian descent.
