A strong earthquake shook southern Mexico and Guatemala late on Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, officials said. The National Seismological Service said the quake struck at at 5:23 p.m. (2323 GMT) and was measured at a magnitude of 5.7. The quake, powerful enough to cause heavy damage in a populated area, was centered in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of the southern state of Chiapas, which borders Guatemala.
