Roma Melee Appalls Bulgarian Town

Crime | August 3, 2006, Thursday // 00:00

A crowd of about 100 people started a clash with policemen in Dimitrovgrad, southern Bulgaria, Darik News said Thursday.

The officers were about to check the load in three horse carriages, but the Roma prevented the operation.

They were taking two pieces of railway track to sell it for scrap metal, according to the media.

Thefts of metal parts in the infrastructure are a serious problem in Bulgaria, and most incidents are blamed on the Roma. The country has suffered tremendous losses because of stolen railway metal, shaft lids, electricity and phone cables.
