Stefan Georgiev, sportsman in the Alpine skiing discipline, had the honour to carry Bulgaria’s national flag during the opening ceremony of the 19th Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. Ekaterina Dafovska, Olympic champion in biathlon from Nagano'98, was initially selected to be flag carrier of the Bulgarian delegation at 'Rice Ecols' Stadium., but hesitations as to the final appointment persisted till the last minute, because of the extremely cold weather in Utah capital city. Ekaterina Dafovska is the only Bulgarian who have won gold medal in the World Olympic Games. Stefan Georgiev hopes to make a good performance in the slalom.

The 2002 Olympic Games got under way Friday in Salt Lake City amid patriotism and pride. The Opening Ceremony was highlighted by the arrival of the World Trade Center flag and the lighting of the cauldron by the 1980 U.S. hockey team. President Bush, linking patriotic and Olympic virtues at the Winter Games, said the competition will produce "lasting memories of laughter and triumph" that will help America and the world overcome the Sept. 11 attacks.
