Sofia, Hamburg Bust Women Trafficking Ring

Crime | July 14, 2006, Friday // 00:00

Bulgaria's police has crushed yet another women trafficking network, it was announced on Friday.

The operation was carried out with assistance from crime fighters in Hamburg, Germany, reports said.

Most of the women thought they were going to work as babysitters or cleaning ladies, but some knew they would be prostituting, media reported. Their pimps made about EUR 200 - 300 a day and then laundered the money in Bulgaria by trading cars and real estate.

Women trafficking has been one of the most serious problems faced by Bulgaria's security authorities.

Amid pressure from the European Union, Sofia has recently stepped up efforts to bust the trafficking networks that seem to span across Europe.
