Irish Teenager "Framed" for Stabbing Bulgarian

Crime | July 5, 2006, Wednesday // 00:00

The Irish boy, who was accused of stabbing a Bulgarian restaurant owner at the seaside resort of Sunny Beach, had been framed, witnesses told SNA in an unconfirmed version of the event.

Oisin Gough, 15, had taken part in a completely different fight, and was a day later framed for the stabbing of Bulgarian Mariyan Martinov, Julie Connor, whose sons Martin, 17, and Ashley, 15, were with Gough throughout the night, claims.

The three and a couple of other friends were at the Xl bar in Sunny Beach when they got into a fight with some Scottish boys, Connor claims. Bouncers chased them out of the disco, where the group from Scotland pulled out knives and stabbed a couple of the Irish boys. Gough had just joined in the melee to protect his 19-year-old sister Becky, who had been punched, when police showed up.

Gough was handcuffed for the stabbing of Ashley and another boy from the group, Connin, as police saw him fighting when they arrived. The boys explained that he wasn't the assaulter, so he was released, Connor said.

Policemen then "decided to make another charge," Julie Connor claims. She said that Gough was called back to the police and included in a line-up where someone identified him as the boy who stabbed the Bulgarian restaurant owner.

"Ashley and Martin where with Oisin the whole night along with Conin and [Rebecca], they did not have knives or the time to carry out this event," Jullie Connor said. She claims that at the time the Scottish boy, whose name they don't know was wandering the streets, bragging about stabbing a Bulgarian.

Preliminary information in the media stated that Gough had admitted to the stabbing and that he said he was drunk and sorry he did it. Newspaper reports then claimed that Gough had sent another friend to tell the media that Martinov had started the brawl by hitting on his sister Rebecca.

Charges have already been raised against the 15-year-old and this is an ongoing investigation, so we cannot confirm nor deny any information, a spokesman for the Burgas regional police department said for SNA. Any such claims will be cleared out during the trial, the Ministry of Interior's press centre commented.

Mariyan Martinov suffered three stab wounds to the lower abdomen and had to undergo an hour-long surgery.
