500 Stand up for Michael Shields in Liverpool Rally

No more than five hundred people gathered in a rally for Bulgaria-jailed teenager Michael Shields in Liverpool at the end of last week.

The supporters of the UK football fan, who is serving a 10-year jail term for an attempted murder, heard a letter from him read out by his parents.

A letter of support was also read out by Bishop of Liverpool James Jones, Liverpool Echo reported.

Michael Shields was jailed for 10 years after being convicted of attempted murder of bartender Martin Georgiev in the Golden Sands resort. He was holidaying in the Bulgarian resort after seeing his favourite team win the Champions League final.

Earlier another Liverpool fan Graham Sankey, 20, confessed to the crime but refused to come back to Bulgaria and give evidence in person. The Bulgarian authorities then refused to consider the evidence. Sankey subsequently retracted his confession and his solicitor said his client was involved in a different fight.
