BULGARIANS DO NOT THINK EU ACCESSION DEPENDS ON THEM, SURVEY SHOWS

About 85% of the Bulgarians associate EU accession with higher living standard. “When we join Europe, our salaries will go up and then we’ll become Europe’s citizens,” is the most widely spread idea about Bulgaria’s eurointegration.

The average Bulgarian does not think that Bulgaria's government or community is responsible for EU joining, the prevailing conception is that Bulgaria’s membership in EU depends on the decision of the European Union instead of Bulgaria’s progress.

These conclusions were made in a research of the group for European forecasts and research – a forum, under the program “European integration and regional stability” with Open Society foundation.

Around 95% are willing to participate in a referendum for Bulgaria’s membership in the European Union. However, the majority of them do not have a clear idea what EU membership is about.

The research shows that the majority of the Bulgarians have no idea about the negative consequences from EU membership as well as about the compromises that need to be made in economic terms.
