Cinema box office revenue in 2001 plunged to BGN 7,6 M. The 10% fall marks a downward trend for the third year in a row. Cinemagoers also decreased to about 1,7 million. Alexandra Films topped the list of Bulgaria’s film distributors, bringing in BGN 2,8 M in box office revenue, which accounted for 36,1% of the total. Sunny Films ranked second with BGN 2,4 M. The top five distributors included Kinoweltduga (BGN 1,1 M), United Cinema (BGN 740,000) and US-registered New Films International (BGN 200,00). Major foreign film distributors did not withdraw from the Bulgarian market, despite its small capacity. Warner Bros. And Columbia TriStar are partners of Alexandra Films, while United International Pictures Corp. (UIP), including Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures and Dream Works SKG, and Buena Vista are Sunny Films’ partners. 20th Century Fox chose Kinoweltduga as its Bulgarian partner.
