Ten insurance companies still plan to issue obligatory “green card” policies for travels abroad, starting April, after insurance and re-insurance company Evropa gave up plans to do so. The companies rival the current monopolist issuing Green cards insurance policies in Bulgaria – local insurer Bulstrad, majority-owned by Dutch-based TBI Holding. They are required to submit a six-year bank guarantee for EUR 600,000 plus a re-insurance plan by April 4th the latest. A total of 16 banks have been allowed to issue guarantees, which is seen as the most difficult requirement to meet. The number of eligible candidates is expected to shrink even further. The National Green Card Bureau was set up in July, 2001 by 11 insurance and reinsurance companies. Last month it set premium revenues for 2002 at BGN 30 M.
