Cleaning Firms Cheated Sofia, Check Shows

Crime | June 13, 2006, Tuesday // 00:00

Firms hired to clean up Sofia have stolen about BGN 300 000, the head of the Sofia Inspectorate announced after a special check.

The firms have submitted fake invoices and received money for services they didn't really perform, Galen Ganchev has revealed.

That has emerged after checks into only four of Sofia's 24 districts, for a period of two months.

Now authorities are poised to investigate the entire work of the firms back to 2003, Darik radio said.

Meanwhile, the first findings will be sent to the prosecution, officials have said.

Losses of millions of levs will most probably surface after the probe is completed, mayor Boyko Borisov was cited as saying.
