Former Sofia mayor Stefan Sofianski will enter the Sofia City Court again on Tuesday on charges of malfeasance in office.
Sofianski, who is now an MP from the tiniest right wing Bulgarian People's Union but was stripped of immunity on his own demand, and Sofia Municipality Chief Accountant Antoaneta Makedonska are on trial in connection to the sale of the Halite, a shopping mall in downtown Sofia.
Sofianski will enter the courtroom on charges of devaluating 400 times the market price of the Halite and forming a joint venture between Sofia Municipality and Israeli company Ashtrom about five years ago. The prosecution also claims that Sofianski made the in-kind contribution by balance value, without the asset being assessed by three certified experts.
If found guilt Sofianski faces ten years in jail.
Stefan Sofianski was probed for several reported cases of malfeasance in office. The lawsuits in question are known as the deal for the Millenium center and the ammunition dump in Sofia and a case for malfeasance in office in a deal for the Business Centre at Sofia's 1 Gurko St., which was transformed into Grand Hotel Sofia.
All legal suits were halted because of Sofianski's MP immunity. Proceedings under three stalled trials against Stefan Sofianski were resumed after he was stripped of MP immunity on February 22.
