By the end of the year Bulgaria will sign a constructor for the Belene nuclear power plant, a top official says.

The head of the National Electricity Company (NEC) Lyubomir Velkov has said that preparations for the start of the building were advancing according to schedule.

Czech company Skoda Alliance and Russia's Atomstroiexport are the two bidders for the design and construction of the Belene plant.

The winning bidder for the project, estimated to cost about EUR 2 B, should be announced by August 1.

The Belene project was first launched in 1986, but was suspended in 1991, due to financial problems and pressure from environmental groups.

Belene's first reactor should become operational over 2013-2015. Until 2018, the second reactor should be switched on.
