Bulgaria's Ex FM: EU Wants Results

Politics » BULGARIA IN EU | May 20, 2006, Saturday // 00:00

Former Foreign Affairs Minister Solomon Passy said Saturday that the European Union would be expecting results from Bulgaria until the last possible moment.

Passy, who is currently chair of the Parliamentary Commission on Foreign affairs, said for private Darik radio that the latest EC report had been a green light. There are still a couple of crossroads that the country had to pass, though he added.

The chances for Bulgaria to enter the EU on January 1, 2007 have increased considerably, Passy believes. He said that there was no need of changes right at the finish line, for the government had already started working.

The former FM thinks that the reason for Romania's better prospects was that progress there was more visible and that their clerks didn't jump into arguments with the EU experts, but dealt with the problems instead.
