Bulgarian Magistrate Jailed for Corruption

Crime | May 18, 2006, Thursday // 00:00

Bulgarian magistrate Stefan Stefanov was sentenced to three years in jail on Thursday for demanding a USD 1,500 bribe to drop an investigation.

The sentence is the toughest a Bulgarian official has ever received for corruption.

Stefanov was also sentenced to five years on probation, during which he wouldn't be able to practice law again. Any other offence in this period would send the corrupt investigator behind bars again.

The defence will appeal the sentence.

In the meantime police reported that about 60% of the 30,494 crimes that took place in Sofia in 2005 have been solved so far.
