European Commission President Jose Manual Durao Barroso called to Bulgarian administration to consider even shortened summer holidays to make up with the reforms by October.

During a visit to Sofia, Barroso repeated the decision of the EU's executive arm to review once again - in early October - the situation on the outstanding issues as pointed out by Brussels in its latest monitoring report.

Jose Barroso was accompanied by his colleague in charge of enlargement Olli Rehn who landed Wednesday with a flight from Bucharest.

"We do hope to start working on an action plan on the outstanding issues as soon as possible," Rehn told Bulgarian journalists.

Both Rehn and Barroso confirmed the option of separating Sofia and Bucharest en route to the EU saying each country's achievements would be assessed on its own merits.

The Bulgaria-progress monitoring report officially represented a day earlier called for an "intensified enforcement of anti-money laundering provisions" and "more effective and efficient implementation of laws for the fight against fraud and corruption."
