Bulgarian Opposition Wants Post-EC-Report Resignations

In view of the EC report that was presented on Tuesday, opposition heads from Bulgaria's Parliament asked for the heads of some ministers.

A couple of resignations now would be a much better option that an unfavourable report in October, Union of Democrat Forces (UDF) leader Petar Stoyanov said Wednesday. A damning report in the autumn would undoubtedly lead to a political crises, Stoyanov believes.

Ivan Kostov, head of Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB), was much more exact and directly demanded a new governmental team without Ministers Rumen Petkov, Georgi Petkanov and Rumen Ovcharov. The government needs a new formula, without ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedom, Kostov suggested.

The EC report is not a success, Stoyanov claims, adding that a successful report wouldn't have included hints for delaying the country's EU accession.

The cabinet's main responsibilities from now on would be to make sure there are no safeguard clauses in the treaty, the UDF leader explained. He added that they mostly feared the detrimental effect that such clauses would have on foreign investments. Being the first country to enter the EU with safeguard clauses would have a grave psychological effect on Bulgaria, Stoyanov said.

Nationalists Ataka (Attack) also joined in on the government-trashing session and said that Bulgaria needed new elections. A new majority had to enter Parliament that "wouldn't include people tied to the criminal underworld," Ataka leader Volen Siderov has said. Apart from Petkov, who was also attacked by Kostov, Siderov called for the heads of Agriculture Minister Nihat Kabil and Disaster Management Minister Emel Etem, both on the ticket of MRF.
