A high-ranking Romanian official has received assurances that the Dutch Senate will ratify Bulgaria and Romania's EU Accession Treaty on June 13, bringing the process to a close.
Bogdan Olteanu, president of the chamber of deputies in Romania's parliament, conferred in Brussels with the chairman of the foreign policy commission in the Netherlands' First Chamber or the Upper House.
He has been assured that the groups of socialists and liberals in the chamber support the ratification of the treaty.
"These groups make up the required majority for the treaty ratification," Bogdan Olteanu said as cited by the Bulgarian National Radio.
The Lower Chamber of the Dutch Parliament ratified Bulgaria and Romania's EU Accession Treaty with an overwhelming majority at the beginning of February.
The Netherlands, together with France, is believed to be the driving force behind the expected delay in the decision on Romania and Bulgaria's EU entry date.
According to the German daily Die Welt the pair is working behind the scenes, prodding the European Commission to no more than "send a signal" to Bulgaria.
