Killed Bulgarian Mobster Indebted to Greek Smugglers - Report Three years after the failed assassination attempt on his life, Ivan Todorov was shot dead February 22, 2006 as he rode in his Posrche Cayen. Photo by Yuliana Nikolova (Sofia News Agency)

Suspected smuggling baron Ivan Todorov, who was shot dead in downtown Sofia at the end of February, is believed to have owed more than EUR 400,000 to Greek and Macedonian cigarette traffickers.

The debt totals the losses incurred after two attempts to smuggle cigarettes through the Bulgarian ports of Varna and Burgas failed, local Darik radio reported, citing people close to the late Todorov.

The report identified Todorov's Greek partners as two brothers, charged in their home country with building an international ring for cigarette smuggling, starting from Cyprus through Bulgaria and to Italy.

Insiders told Darik Radio that the Greeks imposed a fine of EUR 400,000 on Todorov after he failed to smuggle a total of 20 containers of cigarettes through the two ports. He however refused to pay the sum.

Ivan Todorov was shot dead in broad daylight in central Sofia on February 22. The attack heavily wounded Todorov's driver as the two were riding a Posrche Cayen in the luxurious Lozenets district.

Todorov's murder was the latest bloody salvo in Bulgaria's raging turf war, which has seen a string of bombings and shootings in the past five years without a single person convicted for the murders.
