Following her success at the Australian Open Bulgarian tennis player Magdalena Maleeva was placed under number 14 with 1,688 points in the leading WTA tour tennis rankings issued on January 27. In the meantime it became clear that Maleeva is seeded 6 in the USD 1,124 M Toray Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament. In the first round on January 29 Maleeva will play against Daja Bedanova of the Czech Republic. If she defeats her the next match will be with Martina Hingis, Switzerland. At the Australian Open in Melbourne Magdalena Maleeva, seeded 13, defeated Kveta Hrdlickova from the Czech Republic with 6-4, 7-5 on Wednesday and qualified for the second round, after winning against Marie-Gaiane Mikaelian from Switzerland with 6-3, 6-4. It was the first time since 1994 that Maleeva qualified for the fourth round at the Australian Open, after her victory against 18-Lisa Raymond, United States, 7-5, 6-1 in women's singles matches. In the fourth round Venus Williams of the U.S. won in straight sets 6-0 6-3 against Maleeva.
