Mladic "Halts" Serbia Talks with EU

Politics » BULGARIA IN EU | May 3, 2006, Wednesday // 00:00

The European Union has called off talks on closer ties with Serbia because of its failure to arrest war crimes suspect Ratko Mladic.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said he was disappointed Belgrade had not detained Mladic. The deadline set by the EU expired on Sunday.

Serbia's Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said Mladic was "alone" in hiding and called on him to surrender.

The ex-Bosnian Serb army leader is accused of genocide. Along with his civilian counterpart, Radovan Karadzic, he is the most wanted war crimes suspect in Europe.
