The number of crimes committed in Bulgaria in 2005 has decreased, going down twice over 2001-2004, a survey shows.

The report of the Centre for Democracy Study called "Crime tendencies in Bulgaria - police statistics" was presented during the open session of the State Community commission for crime prevention chaired by Interior Minister Rumen Petkov.

In 2005 police statistics has registered a considerable decrease in the number of committed crimes -8,6%, thus going down twice as compared to the period 2001-2004.

A record-low drop in the number of crime victims has also been registered. Their number has decreased by 18% in 2005 as compared to 2005.

"Bulgaria remains its position of a state with crime level lower than the average for the countries EU members," Interior Minister Petkov commented the data. He also pointed out that despite these encouraging figures Bulgaria's people have the right to demand more effective and tight measures in crime fight.

The survey showed that the number of contract murders in 2005 is lower than it was in 1990.
