A rare painting by Vincent Van Gogh has been sold for more than USD 40 M (about EUR 32 M) at an auction in New York, media broke Wednesday.

"L'Arlesienne, Madame Ginoux" became the fourth most expensive work of the Dutch genius.

There were two bidders for the painting, and an unidentified telephone bidder topped the offer of international art dealer David Nahmad.

The 1890 painting was created while Van Gogh was recovering at an asylum in Provence, France.

"L'Arlesienne, Madame Ginoux" is one of the six known Van Gogh portraits of Madame Marie Ginoux, a cafe owner in Arles, France.

Vincent lived there briefly, and it was during that period when he cut off his own ear.
