EUROPEAN UNION VIOLATES ITS OBLIGATIONS ON N-PLANT UNITS CLOSURE

“The European Union failed to fulfil its commitment to provide compensations for the direct and indirect losses Bulgaria will suffer from the early closure of Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 and Unit 2, “ Kiril Armenkov, former chairman of the Energy Committee and member of the Civic committee for N-plant Kozloduy said on the Bulgarian National Radio. He recalled that in November 1999 the Parliament authorized the then Cabinet to hold negotiations with the EU on the compensations Bulgaria will receive. Under the documents Bulgaria was to hold talks on Unit 3 and 4 till 2004. According to Armenkov Bulgaria kept its engagement to focus efforts on nuclear safety as obliged by these documents. He pointed out that if MPs ratify the sum of EUR 70 M, released by the European Union, Bulgaria risks losing Units 3 and 4 in the next few years.
