Bulgaria Investigates EU Funds Misuses

Bulgaria's Interior Ministry, the Finance Ministry and the Chief Prosecutor's Office are investigating EU funds misuses and will prepare a report on these cases by the end of the month.

The authorities are probing embezzlements in the SAPARD program that harmed the state interests with nearly BGN 500,000, Interior Minister Rumen Petkov informed the ambassadors of the EU country members.

Petkov and Finance Minister Plamen Oresharski presented reports on the results from corruption fight since the beginning of the year.

Minister Petkov explained that cooperation between the Finance Ministry and the Interior Ministry has led to serious results.

Bulgaria's Finance Minister Oresharski also presented to the envoys the measures for restructuring the ministry. He pointed out that over the first three months of the year the Customs agency has registered a growth of BGN 380 M in its revenues. A total of 63 money laundry signals have been received during that time.

Statistics from the Prosecutor's Office showed that so far 58 money laundry cases are being investigated and nine indictment acts have been prepared.
