Spain, which holds the EU presidency in the first half of 2002, will stick to the principle of an individual approach to each EU aspirant, Spanish Ambassador to Bulgaria Jose Angel Lopez Jorin said. According to him Madrid would seek to close as many chapters as possible in the accession negotiations. For Bulgaria these are Agriculture, and Economic and Monetary Union. Ambassador Jorin underscored that the involvement of the whole society in meeting EU criteria is more important than setting an exact date for EU entry. He expressed the hope that Bulgaria will be positively assessed at the Seville European Council in June, when the 15 EU members will review the progress made by the applicant countries on the basis of the European Commission report.
