Bulgaria's police have crashed an organized channel for smuggling luxurious vehicles that had been stolen in Spain, Blagoevgrad police head Kiril Georgiev announced.
Customs officers and policemen teamed up in busting the smugglers who had stolen a number of cars in Spain since 2004. The local customs at Blagoevgrad sported a yard with 13 impounded top class cars that had been imported in the country. These are all quite luxurious cars, with powerful engines, and the import taxes for them are rather high, but they hadn't been paid.
The masterminds behind the scheme used small-time crooks to bring the cars in the country. The "mule" would walk out of Bulgaria through the checkpoint and come back later the same day, this time behind the wheel of a flashy ride. When the import documents were processed the engine and frame number were usually not taken down because they were reported "illegible".
The cars' import taxes were later paid in customs offices in the cities of Pernik and Lom. They were also registered to the names of the same people who imported them in the country, and later sold.
