Sofia, Bucharest Await Pre-Notes on Accession Readiness
EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn is set to issue on Monday, April 3, his preliminary assessment whether Bulgaria and Romania are ready to join the EU in January 2007.
Rehn told journalists he would be giving his preliminary assessment on Monday evening in Strasbourg in the foreign affairs committee of the European Parliament.
In the Commissioner's words, his "final report", which will recommend that the two countries join in January 2007 or push the date back a year, would be made public May 16.
The formal report is to recommend whether the two countries should go ahead or their accession be delayed by one year. However, the final decision to be made by EU heads of state and government, probably during their June summit.
With the countdown on, Bulgaria has amended its Constitution to improve the national judiciary system, which is frequently criticised for being to slow and inefficient.
"We are living critical days as regards Bulgaria's preparation for accession," Rehn has said.
