“The matter of Russia's debt to Bulgaria could be decided as early as the next meeting of the inter-governmental economic cooperation commission due in early February,” Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin said after his meeting with Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister Nikolay Vassilev. On the matter of Russia's debt to Bulgaria, Kudrin said the two countries "have the political will" to settle it. The debt is estimated at about 100 million dollars. Deputy Prime Minister Vassilev said that the relations with Russia are strategically important for Bulgaria and that the government is poised to develop them. He also pointed out that Bulgaria's prime minister planned to visit Moscow in May. Deputy Prime Minister Nikolay Vassilev and Russian Energy Minister Igor Yusufov met and expressed full support for the construction of an oil pipeline linking Burgas and Alexandroupolis. The Russian side confirmed that it saw Bulgaria as a main transit distribution centre for the Balkans.
