Alexandrin Bozhilov, 30, who was shot dead earlier this month by a sniper in the city of Ashburn, Virginia, faced trial for causing physical injury in his homeland Bulgaria.

Mario Yosifov, a 25-year student, who has brought a suit against Bozhilov for breaking his jaw in 2003, broke the news to the local 24 Hours daily.

The legal charges against Bozhilov were raised in 2004, but soon after he obtained a green card and immigrated to the United States.

Bozhilov was shot dead on March 14 after holding a female cashier hostage for a few hours.

Police said that when the man went into the store to pay, the female cashier told him to first remove the gas nozzle from the car and return it to the pump. All of a sudden he jumped over the counter and grabbed the woman - sending panicked customers fleeing.

In the course of four hours, Bozhilov, of Winchester, occasionally brought the woman out of the store in a chokehold. Attempts by hostage negotiators to talk him out of this were futile. When Bozhilov emerged a final time - holding scissors to the woman's neck - a sharpshooter killed him with a single shot.
